There’s so much I’m going to miss about it. Just going to work, being part of the show called “Lost.” Getting to play Desmond Hume, you know. When I read the other scripts that are coming in or stuff that I’m up for, nothing really compares. He’s such a rich character, it’s going to be hard to top.

Is it just me, or is he doing a spot-on Michael Scott impression in the left one…and looking quite Jim Halpert-y in the right one?

He usually goes by his middle name - Ian.
He was born in Peru to a Peruvian mother and Scottish father. He still speaks Spanish fluently.
He lived in Spain, Scotland and Trinidad and Tobago, all before he was 15.
He moved back to Scotland at 15 to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He later joined the Citizens’ Theatre.
He was raised Roman Catholic, and seriously considered entering the seminary. His father was a minister and his uncle was a priest.
He’s peformed with many traveling theater troupes, including: The Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre, The Almeida, Liverpool Playhouse and Babel Theatre Company.
He lived with Annie Wood for about 14 years before they married in June 2006. They have three sons: Elias, Lucas and Esau.
He’s portrayed Jesus, Charles Darwin and of course, a time-traveling Scotsman.
While staying with his friend, actor Brian Cox, in 2004, Ian briefly met Cox’s neighbor in his driveway. That neighbor was Carlton Cuse. Ian later auditioned for Desmond by sending in a video tape from London. After he earned the role, Carlton noticed that show scripts were being sent to an address next door. He then vaguely remembered meeting Ian.
One major thing that appealed to him about the Desmond role is that he could use his natural accent. The producers wanted either an Irish or Scottish actor.
In 2006, he was nominated for a best guest-star Emmy for the season 2 finale. He was the only cast member to earn a nomination that year.
He didn’t cut his hair for the 1996 flashback scenes in “The Constant”. Rather, his long locks were hidden under a wig. All the freighter scenes were shot first, and then he shaved off all his facial hair for the flashbacks. He wore a fake beard for the next two episodes while his real one grew back.
When asked what other Lost character he would like to play, he said that he “wouldn’t want to swap him for any other character.” It’s the “best and richest” role character he’s ever had.
His favorite Desmond episode was “Live Together, Die Alone”, because it finally gave him some information on Desmond’s background.
To stay fit, he swims, surfs, runs, cycles and does a bit of soccer.
He says that, like Desmond, “Tell me not to do something and I’ll do it.”
He said he once stole “a Desmond blue shirt”, but had to give it back.
His family loves living in Hawaii, and they plan to stay there at least until his oldest son graduates from high school in two years.

“I turned up in Hawaii four years ago on a three episode arc, but it was one of those gigs where I looked around and I thought ‘wow this would be just the coolest job to get’, so when I think about it, I wanted it so much. I remember being on set and everything just seemed to be easy; It wasn’t a difficult transition, just one of those things I kind of manifested it.”
(on if he thinks he’s worth of expensive scotch) “Sixty-year-old scotch? I certainly wouldn’t drink it in the office. That’s a good question, actually. Am I a man worthy? Of course! We’re all worthy of 60-year-old scotch. It’s only 60-year-old scotch, you know? If it was 120 year-old scotch, it might be different.”
“[Desmond’s] been kind of lucky. He has the ability to foresee the future, and he had the ability to travel in his mind. So these are sort of cool qualities that we all sort of think, ‘Oh, what would that be like?’ And he has the ability to withstand great amounts of electromagnetism. When you have these qualities, you’re always a little bit cooler than the rest.”
(on filming Charlie’s death scene with Dominic) “It sent shivers up my spine. It was just very moving. He’s a really tremendous actor.”
“I love Terry O’Quinn. He’s a wonderful guy, wonderful actor. He is the one that I really, really enjoy working with. Our scenes, I thought, were quite special. I can’t wait to get back to work with him.”

CHEERS to that! Agreed. HIC is definitely my #1 cast crush. I generally like me men clean-shaven, but I am turned on by alllll hair versions of Desmond.
